Apple might be relying more heavily on Google as it aims to advance its AI capabilities. Apple has requested Google to consider “setting up servers” for a new Siri version powered by Gemini that adheres to Apple’s privacy guidelines, according to The Information. Previously, Apple announced in January that Google’s Gemini AI models would support the updated Siri, which had been delayed last year. The report by The Information suggests that Apple could increasingly rely on Google to progress in AI.
The initial partnership announcement stated that the next generation of Apple Foundation Models would utilize Google’s Gemini models and cloud technology to enhance future Apple Intelligence features, including a more personalized Siri. While the announcement emphasized that Apple Intelligence would continue operating on Apple devices and Private Cloud Compute, it was unclear if the new version of Siri would run on Google’s cloud.
The Information’s article also explores Apple’s history in cloud computing and data center initiatives. Apple has generally been more cautious with its infrastructure spending compared to competitors like Google, Microsoft, and Amazon, who are making significant investments to meet AI demand. Apple’s AI features have not gained much traction, with only 10 percent of its Private Cloud Compute capacity being utilized on average, according to The Information.
