Apple Keeps Releasing Updates for Outdated iPhone in Response to EU Radiation Issues

Apple is poised to launch a software update for the iPhone 12 series, which debuted in 2020, as a result of a health issue flagged by authorities in France. This update will now encompass all iPhone 12 models within EU nations, not solely in France.

The problem originated from French officials concluding that the iPhone 12 failed to comply with radiation exposure testing limits when Apple phased out the device and rolled out the iPhone 15. Despite Apple’s claims that the iPhone 12 adheres to safety norms, the company has consented to collaborate with regulators to resolve the issues.

Previously, Apple recognized the concern and offered a software update for review by French regulators. This update eventually received approval, mitigating the possibility of a recall for all iPhone 12 devices sold in France. The earlier update, issued with iOS 17.1, altered the device’s power transmission when not in contact with the body to fulfill specific testing protocols, which may have led to a slight reduction in cellular performance under certain conditions, although most users were not anticipated to perceive any difference.

Now, five years post the iPhone 12’s launch, Apple is gearing up for another software update to align with the European Commission’s ruling. The company continues to express disagreement with the testing approaches employed by the French ANFR but assures customers that their use of the iPhone 12 remains secure.

This ongoing matter underscores the intricacies of regulatory adherence in the technology sector and the obstacles companies encounter when addressing health and safety issues invoked by authorities.
