Apple Prevents Developer from Updating Mac App Due to Similarity to Discontinued Feature

1 Min Read

Apple’s removal of Launchpad has left Mac users seeking alternatives, with third-party apps attempting to fill the void. AppGrid, a popular replacement, faces challenges as Apple blocks its updates on the App Store. The app’s developer claims that Apple’s reason is its resemblance to the now-nonexistent Launchpad. Introduced in 2011 with Mac OS X Lion, Launchpad offered a grid view of apps on Mac. It’s been replaced by “Apps” in macOS Tahoe, which users criticize for its lack of customization and search functionality. Developers like Attila Miklósi have created apps like AppGrid to bring back a Launchpad-like experience. Though AppGrid remains on the App Store, Apple prevents updates unless its look diverges from the old Launchpad interface, leaving AppGrid’s current version without updates since November 2025. Despite this, the Pro version remains purchasable, with Apple still receiving revenue from sales.
