Today, Apple officially confirmed the film’s existence and its production, while also unveiling the first image featuring DiCaprio and Lawrence in their roles.
The film draws inspiration from the novel of the same title by Peter Cameron. Here’s a brief summary of the book’s plot:
An unnamed American couple journeys to a peculiar, snow-covered European city to adopt a child. The trip proves challenging, leaving the wife, who is battling cancer, in a state of frailness, while her husband fears that her condition may hinder the orphanage from releasing their baby.
Upon their arrival, the couple checks into the vast and unnervingly vacant Borgarfjaroasysla Grand Imperial Hotel, where the bar remains perpetually open and the lobby is filled with an enigmatic array of characters ranging from an aged, flamboyant singer to a decadent businessman to a mysterious faith healer. In this bewildering, frozen realm, nothing is what it appears, and as the couple strives to obtain their child, they seem to unravel more about their marriage, themselves, and existence at large.
The release date for this new film remains unclear. However, one report indicates that production is expected to continue until May. If filming concludes on schedule, *What Happens at Night* might premiere as early as this fall, positioning it as a possible contender for next year’s Oscars.
Martin Scorsese has established a strong partnership with Apple. His prior film with DiCaprio, *Killers of the Flower Moon*, garnered significant awards attention following its release.
