The beta version of Apple Music’s Playlist Playground can create playlists from text prompts, but it struggles with understanding genres, time periods, and more. When prompted for atmospheric instrumental black metal, it failed to deliver, mixing genres inappropriately. Comparatively, YouTube Music’s AI playlist maker performed better. The Playlist Playground’s attempts at creating a modern ambient black metal playlist from the American South yielded just three tracks, with questionable geographic accuracy. A prompt for kid-friendly modern hip hop resulted in outdated and inappropriate selections. Another attempt, asking for industrial-influenced dance punk, mostly failed to capture the essence of the specific bands desired, producing mismatched tracks. While in beta, Playlist Playground’s performance indicates it’s not ready for public use, often providing lackluster and familiar music rather than exciting discoveries. In a final test for a school pickup playlist without children’s music, it delivered a predictable set similar to the “Garden State” soundtrack, at least avoiding overly juvenile tracks. The beta illustrates that Apple Music’s AI struggles significantly with genre comprehension, geography, and lyrical content.
