Apple’s Mac Pro is Dead, Apparently for Good This Time

The Mac Pro line has ended after 20 years. The “cheese grater” Mac Pro, once Apple’s most expensive, is no longer on Apple’s website, as reported by 9to5Mac. Replacing the Power Mac G5 in 2006, it felt outdated after Apple moved to its M-series chips from Intel. Despite the 2023 release of the M2 Ultra edition, featuring internal expansion with PCIe slots, it lacked GPU upgrade support, losing appeal to professionals, even with $699 wheels optional. The Mac Studio, without slots but $3,000 cheaper, emerged as Apple’s powerhouse, featuring M4 Max and M3 Ultra options, with the M5 Ultra anticipated. Apple’s 2013 “trash can” Mac Pro design faced thermal constraints as the industry preferred single, large GPUs. Pro users sought more flexibility, with inputs from figures like Red Digital Cinema’s Jarred Land seeking Nvidia support. Apple shifted back to towers in response, but now the Mac Studio and Thunderbolt 5 serve users needing upgrades.
