Apple’s Passwords app was introduced last year with iOS 18 as a fresh pre-installed password management option for iPhone, iPad, Mac, and more. Changes for Passwords in iOS 26 are slight, but one significant fix tackles a frequent problem users have encountered.
### Passwords App Now Retains Login Version History in iOS 26
For years, Apple has provided password management features on its devices; however, these tools were concealed within the Settings app until iOS 18. With the launch of Apple Passwords, many users, myself included, transitioned to it as their main password manager.
Throughout the last year, a persistent issue has been that passwords can inadvertently be overwritten. This might happen when a new password is generated, but the update isn’t confirmed on the website, resulting in the Passwords app containing the new login while the site still prompts for the previous one. During such instances, users are required to utilize the “Forgot your password?” option to regain access.
Luckily, iOS 26 brings a notable enhancement: the Passwords app now keeps a complete version history for all logins. Users can access a login in the app and see a new ‘View History’ button, which shows up only when multiple password versions are saved. This feature enables users to view:
– Each distinct password version
– The creation date of each password
– An option to delete the history
This upgrade is expected to improve the functionality of the Passwords app for users in the future.
