Apple’s Siri has encountered considerable difficulties during its development, especially with the launch of iOS 18. Although the initial reveal took place 11 months ago, several promised features are still missing, prompting an official recognition of delays from Apple. The company has indicated that these features are anticipated to be released in the forthcoming year, but the situation has sparked concerns regarding the efficiency of Siri’s current framework.
The fundamental problem originates from Apple’s hasty strategy concerning the iOS 18 launch. The company intended to revamp Siri’s framework but did not have adequate time to effectively combine the new and existing systems. Consequently, Siri functions with two distinct “brains”: one for basic commands and another for more complex inquiries. This separation has resulted in a fragmented user experience, with numerous reports of bugs and functionality problems. Apple’s software SVP, Craig Federighi, has voiced worries about the performance of the features that were meant to be included in this update.
To remedy these deficiencies, Apple is planning a thorough reconstruction of Siri’s framework for iOS 19. This new system aims to unify the current functionalities into a cohesive structure, which is expected to be presented at the upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) and released by spring 2026. The change will phase out the older architecture that has been used for over ten years.
Alongside the structural modifications, Apple has enacted significant leadership changes within its AI division. Mike Rockwell, who previously oversaw the Vision Pro project, has taken charge of Siri’s development. He is executing a reorganization of teams focused on speech, comprehension, performance, and user experience, which many employees feel is essential given previous leadership challenges.
While it remains uncertain how effective these modifications will be, there is cautious optimism that Apple’s AI strategy will be stronger going forward, notably in comparison to the challenges encountered during the iOS 18 launch.
