iPhones aren’t the only gadgets in space currently. Many of us can’t go anywhere without our smartphones, and neither do the astronauts aboard the Orion spacecraft. During the historic Artemis II mission, four astronauts traveled 248,655 miles away from Earth, bringing the iPhone 17 Pro Max with them. The spacecraft, named Integrity, is equipped with familiar technology. Commander Reid Wiseman, Pilot Victor Glover, Mission Specialist Christina Koch, and Mission Specialist Jeremy Hansen brought along various items, including a jar of Nutella. Besides iPhones, they’re using gadgets from GoPro, Nikon, and Microsoft for their tasks aboard Orion.
The astronauts are utilizing the iPhone 17 Pro Max to capture their journey through photos. Nikon D5 DSLR cameras are being used for photographing the lunar surface, a key mission objective. Additionally, Microsoft Surface Pro tablets serve as their personal computing devices. These gadgets help with scientific work and routine tasks like checking emails.
Various GoPro cameras are also being used inside and outside the craft to record the mission, with the footage set to feature in a Disney/NatGeo documentary. Specialized GoPro cameras are installed on Orion’s solar arrays, and Artemis II astronauts are using HERO11 Black action cameras and a MAX1 360-degree camera. The mission is closely followed globally, as the crew is set to return to Earth on April 10.
Godspeed, Artemis II!
