Next week, Apple is poised to reveal its most affordable MacBook ever. It will feature an A18 Pro chip, a 12.9-inch screen, and be available in various colors. However, a few significant trade-offs will be made to achieve a lower introductory price. This brings up the question: will it measure up against the MacBook Air?
### Major Trade-Offs
Overall, you can expect to receive all the essential components of a fantastic MacBook experience: an aluminum body, a vibrant Retina LCD screen, an impressive trackpad, extended battery life, and more.
That being said, there are several rumored aspects where the budget MacBook will skimp in comparison to the MacBook Air, including:
– 400 nit display, lacking True Tone functionality, and no P3 color space
– Reduced charging speeds
– Limited storage choices + slower SSD performance
– Absence of keyboard backlighting
– No N1 chip, instead using a more affordable Mediatek networking chip
Generally, these aren’t significant or unexpected reductions. They are all very typical based on previous less expensive Apple offerings. For instance, the iPad Air Magic Keyboard doesn’t feature backlight support.
Certainly, you’ll need to accept that you’re utilizing an iPhone chip instead of an M series chip. Don’t let that bother you, though. Even if it seems inadequate, the A18 Pro actually performs comparably to the M1 in synthetic benchmarks. This doesn’t guarantee it will always perform as well as an M1, but the fact that it’s competitive at all highlights the capability of Apple’s entry-level silicon.
### Will It Provide Good Value?
In the end, whether it’s worth it in comparison to the MacBook Air hinges on its launch price. At $699, it might be challenging to justify, especially at release. The M4 MacBook Air has seen prices drop as low as $749 (though currently it’s priced at $949) – making it a close competition.
However, that’s just the introductory price; naturally, the more affordable MacBook will also see price reductions over time. So, it’s quite likely that the budget MacBook will present a solid value, even against the MacBook Air, with a $300 MSRP gap remaining between the two devices.
If the MacBook is offered at an even lower price, for instance, $649 or $599 – it would be extremely attractive. It’s also rumored to launch in several fun colors like green, yellow, and pink. If the pricing aligns, it could even hold an advantage over the MacBook Air.
We will find out for sure when the device launches next week. Apple will commence a week of announcements starting on Monday, March 2nd, culminating in an in-person media event on Wednesday, March 4th.
