Audio Terror Hits Home: An Undertone Review

1 Min Read

A24’s newest thriller, “Undertone,” revolves around a podcaster entranced by a cursed audio recording. Written and directed by Ian Tuason, the film features Nina Kiri as Evy, a recluse who becomes obsessed with unsettling audio clips. As she investigates, her reality begins to crumble, revealing a chilling truth. “Undertone” is a slow-paced horror that rejects common scare tropes, opting instead for a methodical build-up of tension. Kiri’s character navigates her mother’s home, a space imbued with eerie floral decor, which contrasts starkly with her podcasting setup. The film emphasizes audio terror, with her podcast partner, Justin, sharing disturbing recordings of a sleep-talking woman. As Evy delves deeper, strange phenomena invade her home. Although the film’s sound design is praised, the expected horror clichés detract from its impact. “Undertone” opens in theaters on March 13.
