Budget-friendly streaming is gaining popularity

Roku’s Howdy service is expanding its catalog and plans to broaden to other platforms and regions. This development comes amid rising streaming costs, with services like Amazon Prime Video adding new fees. Many consumers feel they are overpaying for streaming, leading some to cancel subscriptions. Roku aims to attract these cost-sensitive users with Howdy, offering more than 10,000 hours of ad-free content at $2.99 a month. Anthony Wood, Roku’s CEO, believes Howdy will be a significant business. The service offers older titles, distinguishing itself from premium options. Roku has been enhancing its library through partnerships and plans to extend Howdy to third-party devices, making it globally accessible. This move could influence other free streamers to create similar paid plans. YouTube has already introduced a Premium Lite plan in the US. The challenge for Roku is to balance subscriber growth with content licensing costs to remain profitable. Over time, service prices may increase, as seen with other platforms.
