### ChargePoint’s Uncuttable Cable: A Revolutionary Advance in EV Charging Security

With the growing popularity of electric vehicles (EVs), the essential infrastructure that supports them—especially public charging stations—has become a vital element of the shift toward cleaner transportation. Nevertheless, this infrastructure is increasingly threatened by vandalism and theft, often propelled by the high demand for copper found in charging cables. To tackle this escalating problem, ChargePoint, a premier EV charging network, is implementing inventive measures to safeguard its stations and users.

#### The Challenge: Theft and Vandalism of Copper

EV charging stations are regularly targeted by vandals and thieves seeking the valuable copper wiring within the cables. This issue has become so prevalent that even ChargePoint’s headquarters located in Campbell, Silicon Valley, has experienced vandalism on two occasions. ChargePoint CEO Rick Wilmer notes that the situation has escalated to a critical point, causing frustration among both the company and its clientele.

“Even at our headquarter site here in Campbell, in Silicon Valley, we’ve had our site vandalized twice,” Wilmer stated. “I was genuinely so annoyed … I found myself at home in my own workshop, constructing prototypes and bringing my most formidable tools to them, to try and cut them and see what we could innovate.”

#### The Innovation: Uncuttable Cables

ChargePoint’s response to this dilemma is a pioneering solution: an uncuttable charging cable. The design features hardened steel and advanced polymer materials, rendering the cables remarkably difficult to sever, even with specialized equipment. Wilmer personally evaluated initial prototypes in his home workshop, utilizing an array of tools to confirm the cables’ resistance to tampering.

These uncuttable cables are anticipated to be ready for use by early summer, providing a strong deterrent against theft and vandalism. ChargePoint is also extending its efforts by planning to license the technology to other entities within the EV charging sector, promoting a cooperative strategy to address this pervasive issue.

“We’ve partnered with a few [cable vendors] to fabricate these cables… and we can direct anyone interested to those vendors and grant [them] permission to manufacture cables utilizing this technology for other companies,” Wilmer clarified.

#### ChargePoint Protect: An Alarm System to Deter Criminals

Alongside the uncuttable cables, ChargePoint has introduced an alarm system known as “ChargePoint Protect.” This feature is designed to further discourage theft by making any tampering attempts highly noticeable. If an individual attempts to cut a cable, the system activates flashing lights and loud sirens, creating a scenario that is “pretty obnoxious,” as described by Wilmer.

The software that powers ChargePoint Protect enables operators to group multiple charging stations together. Should one alarm be triggered, every station in the group will sound their alarms, making it exceedingly difficult for thieves to go undetected. This feature is particularly advantageous for preventing large-scale thefts, where entire locations are targeted.

“You may damage one cable, but you’re not going to get the entire site, which is typically what we’ve observed,” Wilmer remarked. “Those motivated by the value of the copper in the cables, or whatever drives them to do this, tend to aim for the whole site.”

#### A Cooperative Response to Industry Hurdles

ChargePoint’s proactive strategy to combat vandalism and theft underscores the company’s dedication to innovation and customer satisfaction. By creating uncuttable cables and extending licensing to other producers, ChargePoint is establishing a new benchmark for security in the EV charging arena. The introduction of the ChargePoint Protect alarm system further bolsters this initiative, ensuring that charging stations remain functional and secure.

As the EV market expands, the demand for dependable and secure charging infrastructure will only intensify. ChargePoint’s solutions not only tackle immediate issues but also lay the groundwork for a more resilient and sustainable EV ecosystem. Through these innovations, the company is aiding in ensuring the transition to electric mobility stays on course, unimpeded by disruptions caused by vandalism and theft.

#### The Broader Picture: Safeguarding the Future of EV Infrastructure

The rise of electric vehicles marks a significant transformation in the global transportation framework, yet it also presents new challenges. As public charging stations become increasingly prevalent, ensuring their security and reliability is crucial for maintaining consumer confidence and promoting EV adoption.

ChargePoint’s initiatives to counter vandalism and theft highlight the value of innovation in overcoming these obstacles. By addressing the vulnerabilities in EV charging infrastructure, the company not only safeguards its own network but also contributes to the overarching vision of a sustainable, electrified future.

Ultimately, ChargePoint’s uncuttable cables and alarm systems represent more than mere technical fixes—they embody resilience and creativity in overcoming adversity. As the EV sector continues to develop, these innovations will undoubtedly be instrumental in shaping its future.
