For individuals experiencing hearing loss, transforming AirPods Pro into clinical-grade hearing aids could be revolutionary. Additionally, Hearing Test provided users with essential, scientifically-validated information without the need for a medical appointment or costly evaluations.
Both features greatly impressed me, but the third feature—Hearing Protection—initially seemed to be more of an afterthought. However, over time, with a bit of exploration, I’ve begun to realize the significant power of this one software enhancement.

Apple clarifies how Hearing Protection adjusts to varying environments and noise modes, allowing you to engage fully in activities while protecting your hearing.
– Transparency mode offers 11-15 decibels (dB) of sound reduction (attenuation). Activate this mode when you wish to stay aware of your surroundings, such as at concerts or sporting events.
– Adaptive mode delivers 25-29 dB of attenuation. Select this mode when sound levels fluctuate or are erratic, such as during city traffic or commutes.
– Noise Cancellation mode provides 25-30 dB of attenuation. Opt for this mode when you desire a consistent level of hearing protection, particularly in situations where you want to minimize distractions.
When I underwent the AirPods Pro 2 Hearing Test last fall, it indicated that I had no noticeable hearing loss. This was, of course, excellent news. However, I still receive occasional Noise app alerts on my Apple Watch regarding loud environments. Knowing that my AirPods are automatically reducing sounds in those situations is a great relief.
