Simon Shuster has been reporting on Russia and Ukraine for over 15 years, primarily as a TIME Magazine correspondent. Born in Moscow, Simon moved to the U.S. as a refugee when he was six. After graduating from Stanford University in 2005, he worked in Moscow as a reporter for various outlets, profiling figures like Vladimir Putin and Ukraine’s last three presidents. His extensive coverage of the Ukraine war led to a ban from Russia due to being seen as a security threat after Crimea’s annexation.
Simon authored the 2024 book The Showman: Inside the Invasion That Shook the World and Made a Leader of Volodymyr Zelensky, and wrote the TIME article “How Ukraine Gamified Drone Warfare.” Currently, he is working on a new book exploring the future of warfare influenced by the Ukraine conflict.
Simon joins Kevin Ball to discuss drone warfare, AI-assisted targeting, the gamification of drone combat, and the evolving nature of global power and war technology.
