Years after becoming free to play, EA introduces new monetization methods for The Sims 4. This month, an in-game marketplace will launch, allowing users to purchase creator-made items with a new currency called “Moola.” This development follows The Sims 4’s transition to free play in 2022.
Creators wishing to sell in-game items must join the Maker Program, accepting applications starting March 5th. EA provides a “Maker Suite” with tools, resources, and guidelines to ensure content compatibility.
In the marketplace, creators can offer “Maker Packs,” and users can buy “Moola” to spend there. Creators earn about 30% of sales from Maker Packs. EA supports creators with no overhead costs, reviewing marketplace content for safety and compatibility. Free or early access content offered elsewhere is excluded from the marketplace.
Launching on PC and Mac on March 17th, the marketplace will expand to PlayStation and Xbox soon after. EA emphasizes enhancing user choices and supporting creative makers to enrich The Sims experience. The ongoing success of The Sims is highlighted in EA’s financial reports, despite the recent shutdown of The Sims Mobile, and development continues on the next-gen game, Project Rene.
