Elon Musk: New Terafab Factory to Produce Billions of AI Chips, Operate in Space

1 Min Read

Elon Musk unveiled plans to construct Terafab, the largest semiconductor manufacturing facility to date, in a joint project with Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI. Announced during a livestream, Musk’s ambitious $20 to $25 billion venture aims to advance towards a “galactic civilization.” Initially located next to Tesla’s Giga Texas in Austin, Terafab will be capable of producing and iterating chip production within a single building, unlike any other facility globally. Musk projects a production capacity of 1 million chip wafers per month using 2-nanometer tech, vastly surpassing current semiconductor manufacturers like TSMC. The plant aims to produce 100 to 200 billion AI and memory chips annually for Tesla, as suppliers such as Samsung and TSMC cannot meet Tesla’s expansion needs. Musk emphasized the necessity of building Terafab to secure chip supply, envisioning it to eventually generate immense computing power. While this may seem lofty, it’s consistent with Musk’s tradition of ambitious goals. However, timelines remain vague, given past delays in achieving projected rollout schedules.
