A former employee of Meta is facing criminal investigation in the UK. London’s cybercrime unit is probing a former Meta engineer who is accused of downloading over 30,000 private user images from Facebook profiles. According to court documents obtained by The Guardian, the former employee allegedly created a script that evaded detection by internal security systems. Meta reported over a year ago that it discovered the unauthorized access, subsequently terminated the employee, informed affected users, and enhanced its security protocols. The case was handed over to UK authorities, leading to the employee’s arrest in November. Meta stated it is cooperating with the ongoing investigation. The company has faced past criticism for its handling of user data privacy and security practices, including recent issues with Meta AI chatbot prompts and a lawsuit alleging unauthorized access to encrypted WhatsApp messages.
