The curse, detailed in the fourth episode, has afflicted Rachel’s family for years. An ominous elder informs her of it in episode 1. The curse began with his ancestors: The groom died before the wedding; the bride begged Death for his return, bargaining their descendants to find their soulmates or pay with their lives.

Rachel’s family must marry their soulmate by sundown on their wedding day, or suffer death or pass the curse onto the betrothed’s family. The informant is immortal, doomed to watch every Harkin wedding and their probable failure to find a true soulmate.
