Finally, Replace Your Embarrassing Gmail Username

2 Min Read

Your previous email address will remain on your account as an “alternate” to ensure you don’t lose any emails.

Starting Tuesday in the US, Gmail users can modify the section of their email address before “@gmail.com,” as noted by Android Authority. This update allows you to change your Gmail username, with the previous email address still functioning as an alternate so messages will still be delivered to your inbox. Be aware that you can only create a new email address once a year, and the username cannot be used for another Google Account.

The option to update your Gmail address began rolling out last year and is now accessible to all US users. This can be beneficial for replacing outdated email addresses, especially after a name change. After updating your Gmail username, you may need to modify your login information for any applications and sites where you’ve used your email.

To use the feature, open the Gmail app and tap your profile icon. Go to “Manage your Google Account,” then click “Personal info” and select the “Email” option. An arrow next to your email address lets you choose “Change Google Account email,” if applicable. If you’ve changed your username recently, this option may not be available.
