GE Introduces Compact Nugget Ice Maker for Smaller Counter Spaces

The GE Profile Opal Mini is set to launch in July 2026 at a price of $299. GE has unveiled two new compact versions of its Opal nugget ice machines, which are designed to take up less counter space and come with lower price points. Like the larger and more expensive Opal 2.0 Ultra, these new machines produce nugget ice—also known as chewable or pellet ice—by freezing layers of ice flakes into chewable nuggets that have more surface area to chill drinks quickly.

Originally available only in restaurants, GE introduced its first Opal machine for home use in 2015. The current models, including the Opal 2.0 Ultra, start at a hefty $579, but the new GE Profile Opal Mini will be more budget-friendly at $299, with the GE Profile Opal Mini Pro priced at $379.

The basic GE Profile Opal Mini is more compact because it replaces a side water tank with a top-fill built-in reservoir. It can still produce up to 34 pounds of ice daily if regularly emptied and refilled, featuring a filter for improved taste and an automatic descale function. However, as observed by The Verge’s Jennifer Pattison Tuohy in her review of the Opal 2.0 Ultra, maintaining cleanliness of these machines can be challenging.

The Pro version of the GE Profile Opal Mini comes with a side tank to reduce the frequency of refilling, albeit with a bigger footprint. It also includes a scale-inhibiting filter, a stainless steel ice scoop, and premium stainless steel finishes (with color options yet to be finalized). Additionally, the Pro model offers Wi-Fi connectivity for scheduling via a mobile app and notifications of maintenance requirements.
