Utilizing advanced light field displays and a multitude of cameras, Google Beam captures an intricate 3D model of a participant in real-time. This representation is then sent and shown to the other participant via a specialized screen that directs different light rays to each eye, crafting a convincing illusion of depth and presence.

“This technology enables eye contact, the ability to read subtle cues, and fosters understanding and trust, just like being face to face,” Google stated in its announcement.

AI-Powered Instant Speech Translation

A standout feature of Google Beam is its instant speech translation. This functionality permits users to engage in fluid conversations regardless of language differences while maintaining the speaker’s voice, tone, and emotional nuances. For example, a French speaker can converse with an English speaker, each hearing the other in their own language.

This capability is also being extended to Google Meet, increasing accessibility for users who may not currently possess Google Beam hardware.
