In November, Epic and Google proposed a settlement to change Android globally without entirely disrupting Google’s monopoly. Google has decided to implement many proposed changes immediately instead of waiting for the settlement’s approval. By June 30th, Google will reduce app store fees to 20% in the US, UK, and European Economic Area, and introduce a “Registered App Stores” program outside the US. Developers can offer their own billing systems with alternative fees.
Fee reductions are part of specific programs with undisclosed terms. Google Play’s billing will charge a separate market-specific rate of 5% in the EEA, UK, and US. The in-app purchase fee drops to 20% for new installs, and developers in the Apps Experience Program can access lower rates. Recurring subscription fees will be 10%.
The fee changes roll out by June 30th for the EEA, UK, and US, by September 30th for Australia, by December 31st for Korea and Japan, and worldwide by September 30, 2027. Google will update its Games Level-Up and App Experience programs, launching Registered App Stores with a major Android release by year-end.
Epic, after negotiating an $800 million deal with Google, supports the changes. Both companies claim these changes resolve their global disputes, though they remain in US court. More information will be provided following discussions with key figures.
