Google is discontinuing its Weather app for smartwatches operating on Wear OS 6 and later, indicating a notable transformation in how users will obtain weather data on their devices. This alteration signifies that users with Wear OS 6 or later will no longer access Google’s built-in Weather app. Instead, they are advised to utilize weather applications offered by their smartwatch manufacturers or acquire third-party options from the Play Store.
For individuals using smartwatches equipped with Wear OS 5 or earlier, the current Google Weather app will continue to be accessible, providing a seamless experience for users who have not yet transitioned to the most recent operating system.
Owners of the Pixel Watch, however, will undergo a distinct change. Google is launching the new Pixel Weather app, which will take the place of the existing Weather app on Pixel Watches running Wear OS 6 or newer. This new app showcases the Material 3 Expressive design, presenting a more attractive and user-friendly interface with more prominent UI components and refreshed tiles for simplified weather updates at a glance.
The shift to the Pixel Weather app occurs automatically for all Pixel Watch models utilizing Wear OS 6 or later. Users of other smartwatch brands, including Samsung, OnePlus, or Mobvoi, who upgrade to Wear OS 6 will still have the ability to use the Weather app if it was installed before the update.
Despite the discontinuation of the Google Weather app, Wear OS smartwatch users can continue to depend on Gemini or Google Assistant for weather updates, ensuring they have access to the most current weather information through alternative options.
