Google has unveiled an updated version of its Android Automotive open-source OS for software-defined vehicles. Previously limited to infotainment systems, the platform’s “open infrastructure” is now extending to non-safety aspects of the vehicles’ internal computing systems. As vehicles increasingly resemble “computers on wheels,” the industry faces significant software fragmentation, with manufacturers relying on diverse software from different vendors. Google’s strategy is to position itself as the primary software provider, addressing this fragmentation. This initiative aims to enhance the driver experience by delivering a more cohesive in-car experience and faster updates, according to Matt Crowley, Android Automotive’s product manager. Features will include integrated voice assistance and proactive maintenance reminders, making cars an extension of users’ digital lives. The new software will facilitate quicker over-the-air updates, improved voice assistance, and smart maintenance alerts. Non-driving functions such as climate control and seat adjustments will align under Android, expanding the system beyond infotainment. It creates a unified ecosystem for remote cabin conditioning, digital key management, and driver profiles. Automakers stand to gain from reduced software development costs and the ability to focus on branding, using Google’s foundational code. Google is collaborating with entities like Renault Group and Qualcomm to deploy this software-defined vehicle version. Existing partnerships include Volvo, Polestar, GM, Nissan, and Honda. Google and Apple are vying to take charge of automakers’ software initiatives. While both offer phone-mirroring services, they are expanding their reach. Apple has introduced CarPlay Ultra, covering functions like HVAC controls, available on Aston Martin and soon Porsche.
