Grab to Acquire Foodpanda Taiwan from Delivery Hero for $600 Million

Delivery giant Grab announced on Monday its plan to acquire Delivery Hero’s Foodpanda operations in Taiwan for $600 million in cash, marking its inaugural venture beyond Southeast Asia. The deal awaits regulatory approval and aims for completion in the latter half of 2026, with full transition of users, merchants, and driver-partners to Grab’s platform by early 2027.

This development follows Uber Technologies’ failed attempt to purchase Foodpanda’s Taiwan operations in March 2025, which was blocked by Taiwan’s antitrust regulator due to competition issues.

At the time, Uber Eats and Foodpanda dominated Taiwan’s food delivery market, with Foodpanda holding a 52% market share compared to Uber Eats’ 48% between 2022 and 2023. The Fair Trade Commission noted that their combination would control about 90% of the market, potentially reducing competition and raising prices.

The scenario could differ with Grab’s potential acquisition, as the Singapore-based firm would capture just over 50% market share, making it a formidable competitor to Uber Eats rather than a monopoly.

“This is a natural next step for Grab, as our experience in Southeast Asia is a direct fit for this market,” stated Anthony Tan, Group CEO and Co-Founder of Grab. “Taiwan’s 23 million population demands mobile-first services, similar to Southeast Asian consumers served by Grab. We see great potential to enhance the food and groceries delivery sector here.”

Following the acquisition, Grab plans to expand to 21 cities across Taiwan, solidifying its presence in an important market. This deal combines Grab’s AI-driven platform and operational expertise with Foodpanda’s extensive local outreach. Foodpanda’s Taiwan operations generated about $1.8 billion in Gross Merchandise Value (GMV), according to the company.
