Hands-on with the Apple iPhone 17e: New Chip, Expanded Storage, and MagSafe

The new budget-friendly iPhone resolves several major issues found in the previous model. Apple introduced the first “e” model iPhone, the iPhone 16e, leading to some confusion among tech reviewers, myself included. The criticisms were not related to battery life or its processor, both of which were impressive, nor to its outdated design. Instead, the absence of MagSafe, Apple’s magnetic wireless charging technology which simplifies accessory attachment, was the primary concern. Surprisingly, Apple’s exclusion of MagSafe likely saved on production costs but also meant owners missed out on Apple’s extensive accessory ecosystem.

This year’s budget phone, the iPhone 17e, has reinstated MagSafe, addressing this concern. I received an iPhone 17e review unit and happily employed my Apple Wallet and magnetic chargers with it. Apple also provided a Clear Case with MagSafe, allowing for magnetic charging without case removal, even if it’s not my favorite design.

While budget phone buyers may be less inclined to splurge on extra accessories, MagSafe offers a straightforward feature that pairs with cheaper third-party accessories without hindrance for those uninterested. I’m glad to see Apple make this sensical addition to the iPhone 17e.

The primary physical change between the iPhone 17e and 16e is the inclusion of MagSafe, along with a new Soft Pink color. The version I received came in Soft Pink, a very gentle shade. Similar external features include no Dynamic Island, with Face ID sensors and the selfie camera remaining in a display notch, same dimensions (retaining compatibility with iPhone 16e cases), and comparable weight (169 grams versus 167 grams).

The display remains a 6.1-inch OLED with a 60Hz refresh rate, making transitions and animations less smooth compared to a 120Hz display.

Significant improvements are internal, namely the new A19 chip capable of handling advanced AI functions, along with a new C1X modem. Notably, the iPhone 17e starts with 256GB storage, double that of the 16e while retaining the $599 starting price, making it a valuable upgrade. Higher storage options include 512GB for $799.

With the latest chip and ample storage, this phone promises relevance for at least four to five years, equating it closely to the $799 iPhone 17, save for a minor difference with fewer GPU cores on the A19, slightly lesser for gaming. This choice suits those indifferent to the most cutting-edge phone, focusing on functionality.

Turning to the camera, though specs remain equivalent to the prior iPhone 16e, substantial improvements could arise from the new A19 chip, possibly enhancing shots with features like next-gen portraits with Focus and Depth Control. Initial testing in dim lighting showed a notable improvement over its predecessor, but further assessment is needed.
