HBO Max’s Global Password-Sharing Crackdown

Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming service aims to increase subscribers after expanding internationally. HBO Max’s crackdown on password sharing is set to intensify. During an earnings call on Thursday, JB Perrette, head of Warner Bros. Discovery streaming, announced a global expansion starting in 2026, as reported by The Wrap.

The company’s paid sharing initiative in the US has grown over the past year, introducing more aggressive prompts in August, encouraging users to pay an extra $7.99 per month to add another user. Following HBO Max’s launch in Europe and Latin America, with rollouts planned in the UK, Ireland, and the Asia-Pacific, the service sees more opportunities to curb international password sharing.

Perrette stated, “We are in the second inning of our password sharing enforcement. It is just beginning to get scale.” HBO Max added 3.5 million subscribers worldwide in the last quarter of 2025, totaling 131.6 million. Warner Bros. Discovery projects reaching 150 million subscribers by year’s end.

In December, Warner Bros. Discovery agreed to an $83 billion deal to sell its studio and streaming service to Netflix but has since reopened merger negotiations with Paramount, which remains persistent.
