OpenAI is working to reintegrate Sora. By Chase DiBenedetto on March 14, 2026.
OpenAI appears to be planning to incorporate its video generator tool, Sora, into ChatGPT, only months after Sora’s standalone app was launched, according to The Information. ChatGPT might soon have the capability to create short films upon request.
Despite being available as a separate app, this move indicates OpenAI’s primary focus on enhancing ChatGPT. The integration is expected to be costly—OpenAI estimates spending $225 billion on its models through 2030—but maintaining ChatGPT as a leading chatbot could offset expenses. OpenAI may also consider monetizing video generation, as proposed to Sora app users.
Since its launch last year, Sora 2 experienced ups and downs. OpenAI secured a $1 billion investment from Disney, allowing the use of Disney’s characters by ChatGPT and Sora users, despite criticisms over deepfakes and IP infringement.
In February, following a lawsuit from the Cameo app, a judge ruled against OpenAI using “cameo” for its AI likeness tool. The app’s popularity has waned. OpenAI has shifted priorities, introducing native advertising for ChatGPT to bolster its user base and profits, while promoting ChatGPT’s multimodal capabilities, including new dynamic visuals for math and science inquiries.
Disclosure: Ziff Davis, Mashable’s parent, sued OpenAI in April, alleging copyright infringement in AI training and operation.
