In a recent update, Meta has started to trial a new feature on Instagram that enables selected users to view Reels in a floating window, even after they have exited the app. This functionality, referred to as Picture in Picture (PiP), intends to improve user experience by allowing uninterrupted viewing of content without needing to have the app open.
Participants in this trial receive a prompt via a pop-up message urging them to “Try Picture in Picture” while they browse through Reels. The pop-up clarifies that users can adjust their Picture in Picture settings at any moment through the app’s menu. By pressing the “Try it” button, users can enter Instagram’s built-in Share screen, where they can switch the Picture in Picture option on.
This feature has been awaited for quite some time. Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, had earlier suggested the possibility of PiP capabilities in answer to user questions about when Instagram would roll out similar features present on platforms such as TikTok and YouTube. The ongoing test illustrates Instagram’s continuous commitment to innovate and remain competitive by improving how users interact with video content.
Currently, there is no official schedule for when or if this feature will be made available to a wider audience. Users and onlookers are advised to remain alert for updates concerning the rollout of Picture in Picture on Instagram.
