Enterprise software leader Atlassian is introducing a new method for collaboration between humans and AI agents aimed at improving team productivity by “10x the work without 10x the chaos.”

On Wednesday, Atlassian revealed “agents in Jira,” an enhancement allowing users to assign and manage tasks for digital agents within their Jira project management software, all from the same dashboard used for human team members.

This feature enables enterprises to assign tasks to AI agents in the same manner as to people, track progress, set deadlines, and more. Users can also incorporate AI agents into ongoing projects.

Currently, this feature is available in open beta.

The update is designed to offer the same transparency into task management for agents as for human employees, Atlassian’s chief product and AI officer, Tamar Yehoshua, told TechCrunch.

“For decades, Atlassian has specialized in collaboration software to help people work efficiently,” Yehoshua said. “With agents taking on much of this work, coordination between humans and agents becomes essential.”

Atlassian acknowledges that increased automation options do not automatically equate to less work. The crucial aspect of this update is consolidating all activities within one dashboard, Yehoshua stated.

“Recently, there’s been discourse around agents creating additional work and some chaos,” Yehoshua said. “Our strength lies in organizing that chaos.”

As businesses explore returns on AI investments, having the ability to evaluate agent versus human work on identical projects may aid in determining optimal agent deployment and task assignment.

This represents only the beginning, as Atlassian plans to integrate more AI tools across its software offerings, Yehoshua mentioned.

“The aim is to enhance productivity through AI, marking a significant step in integrating AI into existing workflows,” Yehoshua concluded. “This is just the start of a longer journey that I’m excited about.”
