Mastodon Introduces Button for Sharing Website Content

1 Min Read

Mastodon, a decentralized social media platform, has introduced a universal “Share to Mastodon” button, simplifying the process of sharing content. Announced on Monday, this widget allows users to share content on any Mastodon server by connecting their account and redirecting them to the relevant server. Importantly, the feature operates entirely within the browser, ensuring privacy by not tracking data or storing information on the server.

Previously, Mastodon’s decentralized nature posed technical challenges that prevented the development of a universal share button. While third-party solutions existed, none became widespread or easily accessible. With this new feature, website owners can now add the button to their pages. The widget’s open-source code is available for anyone to view or host their version. Mastodon has also introduced features to help new users find relevant servers and provided starter packs for discovering accounts to follow.
