The world’s largest social networks are introducing new AI-powered tools to tackle fraud, but are they sufficient?

We’ve long recognized a fraud issue on Facebook and Instagram. Now, the company behind these networks is countering fraudsters by announcing a suite of AI-driven tools and collaborations with law enforcement.

Meta revealed the removal of over 159 million scam ads in 2025 and the elimination of 10.9 million accounts tied to scams on Facebook and Instagram. It also joined forces with the FBI, Department of Justice, and Royal Thai Police, disabling more than 150,000 accounts and making 21 arrests.

The new tools being implemented include Facebook’s real-time warnings for suspicious friend requests, a WhatsApp alert system for potentially fraudulent device-linking attempts, and an enhanced Messenger feature that uses AI to detect scams and alert users.

No new protections were announced for Instagram, despite its security issues, including recent password reset email problems.

Meta also aims to require advertiser verification in high-risk ad categories, targeting 90% of ad revenue from verified advertisers by the end of 2026, up from 70%.

This announcement coincides with Meta’s facing allegations that its platforms are designed to addict children for profit. Whether viewed as a genuine safety effort or strategic reputation management, Tuesday’s announcement is open to interpretation.
