Meta to Invest in Natural Gas Plants to Power Largest Data Center

Meta and Entergy Louisiana have reached an agreement for the tech giant to finance the electricity expenses of its newest $27 billion data center. Located in Northeast Louisiana, the data center is under construction and expected to require up to 5 gigawatts of power, sufficient to supply around 1 million homes. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg highlighted the scale of the project, noting it would cover a significant part of Manhattan. To prevent Louisiana residents from bearing high electricity costs, Meta will privately fund new energy infrastructure in the state. This includes seven natural gas power plants, totaling 5,200 megawatts of output, 240 miles of transmission lines, and three battery storage sites for excess energy. The rising concerns over economic impacts, environmental effects, and local energy grids associated with artificial intelligence span across political divisions, with a recent poll showing bipartisan support for stricter AI and data center regulations. Despite this, many continue using AI monthly.
