Netflix announced on Thursday that it is acquiring InterPositive, a filmmaking technology company founded in 2022 by Ben Affleck. This acquisition supports Netflix’s strategy for using generative AI in filmmaking, having already implemented it for special effects in original content and assuring investors of its effective AI leverage.

Ben Affleck expressed that he started contemplating AI’s impact on filmmaking’s future in 2022, intending to preserve human judgement and creativity in storytelling. InterPositive aims not at creating AI actors but at assisting production teams with footage edits post-production, such as addressing continuity issues and making lighting adjustments.

Affleck highlighted their model’s ability to understand visual logic and editorial consistency, confronting challenges like missing shots or incorrect lighting. The technology is designed with constraints to keep creative control with artists and ensure benefits enrich the story.

As part of the deal, Affleck becomes a senior advisor for Netflix, though the financial terms were not disclosed. Elizabeth Stone, Netflix’s chief product and technology officer, emphasized in a statement their commitment to serving the creative community by empowering rather than replacing storytellers.
