Nintendo’s latest update for the Switch 2 enhances the performance of original Switch games in handheld mode. Known as the Handheld Boost Mode, this feature forces these games to run as if the console is docked to a TV, improving visuals. Originally limited to 720p resolution in handheld mode, Switch 1 games can now take advantage of the Switch 2’s 1080p display.
Activating Handheld Boost Mode involves navigating to the Switch 2’s settings menu, selecting “System,” and choosing “Nintendo Switch Software Handling” to toggle the feature on or off. Performance may vary depending on the game, and the feature has no effect on Switch 2 titles. The TV mode use might affect game functionality, such as touchscreen usage or identifying attached Joy-Con controllers as a Pro controller. Additionally, using this mode may drain the battery faster. This update is part of the Switch 2’s 22.0.0 version.
