The research tool is swiftly experiencing upgrades.
Google’s AI-driven research assistant, NotebookLM, is going through a notable evolution. Initially launched as Project Tailwind at Google I/O 2022, this tool has progressively transformed into a robust platform for students, researchers, and professionals. With the addition of the Gemini 2.5 Flash model, NotebookLM is now set to provide even more sophisticated and detailed help for intricate research endeavors.
As announced in a post on X (formerly Twitter), Google has confirmed that NotebookLM is now enhanced by Gemini 2.5 Flash. This model is part of Google’s latest generation of “thinking models,” capable of hybrid reasoning—encompassing logical deduction, contextual insight, and memory recall. Users can anticipate more precise and meaningful responses, particularly for complicated queries that demand advanced reasoning.
“The 2.5 models are thinking models, so you should start to see more comprehensive answers, particularly to complex, multi-step reasoning questions.” — @NotebookLM on X
Earlier this week, Google also enhanced the functionality of Audio Overviews, a feature that presents summaries of documents and research materials in audio format. With support for over 50 languages and a newly added Output Language setting, users can now obtain summaries in a language distinct from their default interface—perfect for bilingual or multilingual individuals.
This update makes NotebookLM a more inclusive resource for international researchers and learners, fostering accessibility and cross-lingual education.
NotebookLM is about to become even more reachable with the release of its standalone app during Google I/O 2025 in Mountain View, California. This initiative signifies a major step for the platform, evolving from an experimental tool to a complete application accessible on both Android and iOS.
The app’s description states: “Transform complexity into clarity with NotebookLM, your brain’s new best friend. Join the millions of students, creators, researchers, professionals, CEOs, and more who are saving time, accomplishing tasks, and learning in innovative ways.”
