OpenAI has collaborated with India’s Tata Group to secure a 100-megawatt AI-ready data center capacity in India, with intentions to expand to 1 gigawatt. This initiative is part of a broader effort to strengthen the company’s enterprise and infrastructure presence in one of its rapidly growing markets.
OpenAI announced on Thursday that this partnership with Tata Group is a segment of its Stargate project, focused on creating AI-ready infrastructure and enhancing global enterprise adoption. OpenAI will be the inaugural customer of Tata Consultancy Services’ HyperVault data center business, initially utilizing 100 megawatts of capacity. The agreement also includes deploying ChatGPT Enterprise throughout Tata’s workforce and standardizing AI-native software development using OpenAI’s tools.
The partnership aligns with the “OpenAI for India” initiative, emphasizing the company’s growing presence in the country, which, according to recent estimates by CEO Sam Altman, includes over 100 million weekly ChatGPT users comprising students, teachers, developers, and entrepreneurs. This significant adoption rate makes India one of OpenAI’s critical growth markets as it amplifies enterprise and infrastructure investments in the region.
The local data center capacity will enable OpenAI to operate its most advanced models within India, reducing latency for users while adhering to data residency, security, and compliance requirements for regulated sectors and government tasks. Domestic hosting of compute is vital for enterprises managing sensitive data and operating under data localization and digital infrastructure regulations. These factors could expand OpenAI’s access to enterprise customers requiring in-country processing.
An initial 100 megawatts of capacity signifies a notable commitment within AI infrastructure, where large-scale model training and inference demand power-intensive clusters of graphics processing units (GPUs). Expanding to 1 gigawatt over time would position the Tata facility among the largest AI-focused data center deployments worldwide, highlighting OpenAI’s long-term plans in India.
Beyond infrastructure, OpenAI and Tata Group will establish a strategic enterprise collaboration to boost AI adoption across Tata’s operations. The conglomerate intends to implement ChatGPT Enterprise to its workforce over the coming years, beginning with hundreds of thousands of employees at Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), marking one of the largest enterprise AI deployments globally. TCS also aims to utilize OpenAI’s Codex tools to standardize AI-native software development across its engineering teams.
N Chandrasekaran, chairman of Tata Sons, stated that OpenAI’s partnership would contribute to building “state-of-the-art AI infrastructure in India” while supporting endeavors to equip the country’s workforce for the AI era.
Financial details of the deal were not disclosed, including whether OpenAI is investing capital in HyperVault or leasing capacity.
In November 2025, TCS secured funding from private equity firm TPG to develop AI-ready infrastructure in India under its HyperVault data center business. The platform is backed by approximately ₹180 billion (about $2 billion) in planned investment and is intended to support large-scale compute workloads for hyperscalers and enterprise customers.
OpenAI will also broaden its certification programs in India, with TCS becoming the first participating organization outside the United States. The certifications aim to assist professionals in building practical AI skills across various roles and industries, according to the company. This initiative follows OpenAI’s recent partnerships with leading Indian institutions in engineering, medicine, and design.
OpenAI plans to open new offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru later this year, complementing its existing presence in New Delhi as it extends operations within the country. This expansion is anticipated to support enterprise partnerships, developer engagement, and local regulatory coordination as the company grows its footprint in India.
The announcement coincides with India hosting its AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, where global AI leaders, including Sam Altman, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, and Google CEO Sundar Pichai, are participating alongside Indian startups and enterprises showcasing AI applications across sectors such as finance, healthcare, and education.
OpenAI has been fortifying its presence in India through partnerships with companies such as Pine Labs, JioHotstar, Eternal, Cars24, HCLTech, PhonePe, CRED, and MakeMyTrip, as it aims to embed its models across consumer platforms, enterprise systems, and digital payments infrastructure in one of the world’s largest internet markets.
Together, the data center development, enterprise deployments, and expanding partner ecosystem represent OpenAI’s most comprehensive effort to establish advanced AI infrastructure and applications in India.
