Apple’s Suggested Adjustments for Wi-Fi Router Settings

major Wi-Fi router manufacturers, Apple proposes a number of adjustments you can make to enhance their security and optimize their performance.

While Apple’s advice is aimed at those using its devices, it is applicable to anyone with a Wi-Fi router, a dependable Wi-Fi mesh network, or access points. Below are some of Apple’s key suggestions for Wi-Fi routers.

Opt for WPA3 Personal as the security protocol for your router

Many individuals often leave the Wi-Fi security protocol set to default on their routers, uncertain of its significance. The security protocol utilized by your router, such as WPA2 or WPA3, serves as the main barrier for your wireless network. It encrypts the data exchanged between your devices and the router, making it challenging for any potential attacker to intercept. It also complicates the process of cracking your Wi-Fi password due to this encryption. Nonetheless, Wi-Fi security protocols are usually refreshed with newer Wi-Fi versions to maintain their strength against contemporary requirements. Therefore, instead of sticking with the default or opting for an older protocol, Apple advises adopting WPA3 Personal on your router. This is the most recent version and is compatible with devices that support Wi-Fi 6 and later.

However, if you have devices employing older Wi-Fi versions connecting to your network, which is common, you can select WPA2/WPA3 Transitional. This option employs WPA3 for newer devices and WPA2 Personal (AES) for older devices to guarantee all can connect to your Wi-Fi. If neither of these fits your needs, or the latest standards

I love Godzilla Minus One. Granted, it’s only the second Godzilla movie that I’ve watched, the other being 1998’s terrible Godzilla featuring Matthew Broderick (the soundtrack has bangers, though). While I may not exactly be an expert, this is a good movie, whether you’re a first-time Godzilla viewer or a longtime kaiju fan. If you’ve […]

How to Leave Ring’s Surveillance Network

Recently, Ring ran a Super Bowl ad for its Search Party feature showing how it uses AI to scan footage from Ring cameras and video doorbells to help find lost dogs. It sounds neighborly — until you consider that the same system could theoretically search footage for anything or anyone.  Combined with longstanding concerns around […]
