PC Makers Unprepared for the MacBook Neo

2 Min Read

Apple’s new budget-friendly MacBook is causing a stir in the Windows world. Released on March 13, 2026, the $600 MacBook Neo has quickly attracted attention, prompting Asus CFO Nick Wu to acknowledge its unexpectedly competitive pricing. Despite early awareness of Apple’s plans, the PC industry appears unprepared for this new contender.

Executives have underestimated the Neo’s impact. Apple is now firmly in the budget laptop market, offering a device that could challenge entry-level Windows laptops and Chromebooks. With its formidable manufacturing, design, and technology integration capabilities, Apple is well-positioned for success. However, the PC sector seems oblivious. Wu’s suggestion that the Neo is for content consumption misses its potential, reflecting past mistakes when Windows advocates underestimated Apple innovations.

The Neo’s capabilities are more than sufficient for typical tasks like document handling, web browsing, and streaming, as shown in a 2025 CNET survey. Boasting a quality trackpad, vibrant display, solid keyboard, and excellent speakers, the Neo outshines many low-cost Windows models. Running macOS, it handles 8GB of RAM efficiently, a critical consideration during the ongoing RAM shortage affecting PC pricing.

Benchmarks reveal the Neo’s power, with the A18 Pro chip outperforming many pricier Windows laptops. While the Zenbook Duo exceeds the Neo for high-demand tasks, Apple’s $600 device holds its ground for most everyday activities. Companies like Asus, Microsoft, and Dell must grasp these competitive qualities to develop viable alternatives.

Currently, the Windows sector lacks a proper response to the Neo. Gigabyte does not compete in this segment, while Dell’s affordable offerings lag in features and specifications. Competing effectively calls for creating affordable laptops offering a complete, satisfying user experience, akin to what Apple now offers at a lower price point.
