Pixel 10 Substitutes Reverse Charging with Qi2 Magnetic Innovation

Google has announced that the Battery Share capability, which enables reverse wireless charging, is no longer present on the Pixel 10 lineup. While the Pixel 10 devices are compatible with Qi2 wireless charging, this function has been eliminated due to “physical limitations” related to the integrated magnets. These magnets create a robust connection but hinder the operation of the Battery Share feature. Google has indicated that they are investigating future advancements to improve the Pixel experience.

Battery Share made its debut with the Pixel 5 in 2020, allowing users to wirelessly charge other gadgets by placing them on the back of their Pixel. Although it offered just 5W charging, it proved beneficial in urgent situations. The Pixel 10 specifications page does not mention Battery Share, verifying its absence.

Interestingly, the HMD Skyline, another phone certified for Qi2, continues to support reverse wireless charging despite having magnets. This discrepancy raises questions about whether the restriction is linked to the Qi 2.2.1 standard used by Google. Meanwhile, Apple is anticipated to launch reverse charging with the iPhone 17 series, implying that the removal of this feature from the Pixel 10 may not be a universal restriction.

For the time being, Google has opted to eliminate this feature from its newest Pixel series.
