# iPhone Air: Initial Thoughts and Establishing a New Standard

The iPhone Air has officially been released, and after just half a day’s usage, my first thoughts are evident: this device appears to set a new precedent in the smartphone realm.

## iPhone Air Initial Thoughts: The New Standard

I acquired Apple’s latest ultra-slim iPhone early this morning. Although I have not yet thoroughly assessed the battery performance or the lack of the Telephoto and Ultra Wide cameras, I can confidently state that I find it difficult to picture reverting to a bulkier, heavier iPhone.

Interestingly, my first thoughts on the iPhone Air have strayed from what I anticipated. I expected that the innovative design would impart a sense of futurism akin to the iPhone X. Conversely, the iPhone Air merely feels like the new benchmark for iPhones.

Throughout the day, I’ve utilized the Air for my regular tasks—listening to music, surfing the internet, and communicating on Slack. However, as I get ready for travel, my focus has been somewhat split, hindering me from providing my new Sky Blue Air the attention it warrants. I’ve approached it like any other iPhone, lacking the usual thrill of pushing its boundaries.

Rather than being awed by its slimness, the Air has swiftly positioned itself as my internal standard for what an iPhone ought to be.

## Establishing a New Base Standard for iPhone

The iPhone Air does not come off as a cutting-edge device; it instead signifies the new baseline iPhone of today. In contrast, Apple’s Pro models seem designed for power users, as highlighted by our Editor-in-Chief, Chance, in his review of the iPhone 17 Pro. He characterized the iPhone 17 Pro as the “2021 MacBook Pro-ification” of the iPhone, implying that it has bulked up to cater to high-demand consumers.

The iPhone Air, however, encapsulates what the standard iPhone should be. During the early days of the iPhone, Apple offered solely one model. If that strategy were still in effect, the iPhone Air would likely be the model Apple would opt to market.

Thankfully, Apple presents a varied range of iPhones, guaranteeing there’s an option for everyone. This range is advantageous, but just as the MacBook Air evolved into the preferred Mac over time, and the original iPad Air seemed like a genuine successor to prior iPad models, the iPhone Air is set to become the new norm.

While it may not reach this status immediately due to existing constraints, with future versions that enhance battery performance and possibly incorporate additional cameras, the iPhone Air could indeed reach new heights.
