Hachette Book Group announced it will not publish the novel “Shy Girl” due to concerns about the use of artificial intelligence in its creation. The book was planned for release in the U.S. this spring, and will also be withdrawn from the U.K., where it is currently available. Despite the publisher’s claim that the decision followed a thorough review, GoodReads and YouTube reviewers speculated the text was AI-generated, and The New York Times reported on the issue one day before the announcement. Mia Ballard, the author, denied using AI, attributing potential issues to an editor she hired for the self-published version of “Shy Girl.” Ballard plans legal action, claiming the controversy has harmed her mental health and reputation. Observers, including writer Lincoln Michel, have noted that U.S. publishers seldom perform extensive edits on previously published material.
