Apple unveiled its latest MacBook Air and MacBook Pro laptops on Tuesday, with the MacBook Pro featuring new M5 Pro and M5 Max chips. The new chips boast impressive specs, including an 18-core CPU that offers over 4x the peak GPU compute for AI compared to the previous generation. Prices for the MacBook Pro with an M5 Pro chip start at $2,199 for the 14-inch model and $2,699 for the 16-inch model. Models with M5 Max chips begin at $3,599 for the 14-inch and $3,899 for the 16-inch. Previously, the 14-inch MacBook Pro with an M4 Pro chip started at $1,999. The demand for more computers and data centers for AI has led to a RAM shortage, causing memory prices to surge. Analysts predict smartphone shipments will drop this year due to the shortage, affecting other hardware, including laptops, with Apple’s pricing reflecting the sector’s potential impact.
