Asha Sharma is now assuming the position of CEO of Microsoft Gaming.
Phil Spencer, Xbox’s chief, has announced his departure from Microsoft after 38 years. In a memo titled “A new chapter for Microsoft Gaming,” he disclosed his decision to retire, made last fall, to Xbox employees.
Spencer also mentioned that Xbox president Sarah Bond is departing from Microsoft, prompting a major management shift at Xbox. Asha Sharma, currently serving as president of CoreAI product at Microsoft, will take on the CEO role for Microsoft Gaming, directly reporting to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.
Phil Spencer’s complete retirement memo states:
“When I entered Microsoft’s doors as an intern in June 1988, I couldn’t have envisioned the products I’d help develop, the players and customers we’d engage with, or the incredible teams I was fortunate enough to join. It’s been an epic adventure and a true privilege.
Last fall, I informed Satya of my intentions to step back and embark on the next chapter of my life. Since then, we’ve worked towards a well-planned transition ensuring stability and enhancing the foundation we’ve established. Xbox isn’t just a business; it’s a dynamic community of players, creators, and teams passionate about our mission and approach. It merits a strategic and intentional plan for the future.
Today signifies an exciting new phase for Microsoft Gaming as Asha Sharma takes the CEO position. I’ve worked with her over recent months and have great confidence in her leadership. Her genuine curiosity, clarity, and commitment to understanding players, creators, and future-defining decisions are commendable. This is a crucial moment for our fans, partners, and team, and we’re determined to do it right. I’ll remain in an advisory capacity till summer to aid in a smooth transition.
I am also grateful for the strength of our studio organization. Matt Booty and the studios’ teams continue to develop an impressive portfolio, and I fully trust the leadership and creative momentum across our studios worldwide. Congratulations to Matt on his promotion to EVP and Chief Content Officer.
As part of this transition, Sarah Bond is leaving Microsoft to start a new chapter. Sarah has been pivotal in a defining era for Xbox, influencing our platform strategy, extending Game Pass and cloud gaming, supporting new hardware launches, and steering some of our most significant moments. I appreciate her collaboration and wish her all the best in her future endeavors.
To the Microsoft Gaming team, thank you. I’ve learned immensely, grown with you, and been continually inspired by the creativity, courage, and compassion you bring to players, creators, and each other daily.
I’m exceedingly proud of what we’ve built over 25 years, and I have complete confidence in you and the opportunities ahead. I’ll be cheering you on in this next phase as Xbox’s most passionate fan and player.
Phil
