Tesla is developing a new car that promises to be exactly what many have been hoping for: a smaller, cheaper electric SUV. According to Reuters, which spoke to four people familiar with the matter, the new vehicle will be an entirely new model, distinct from the Model 3 or Model Y. This vehicle, approximately 14 feet long, will be shorter than the 15.7-foot Model Y, and priced significantly lower than the Model 3, which is currently the most affordable Tesla starting at $37,000. Tesla plans to manufacture this new SUV in China, offering it potentially with a smaller battery and a single motor, making it lighter but possibly with less range compared to existing models. While no launch date is provided and the project is in early development, Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently mentioned the company is working on something “way cooler than a minivan.” Tesla has also been known to consider other projects such as the Cybercab. Despite prior reports that Tesla abandoned plans for a cheaper model, Musk denied such claims. Time will tell if Tesla will successfully introduce this new affordable option.
