User reports have emerged indicating that Google’s AI Overviews have been providing inaccurate phone numbers, leading individuals into scams rather than delivering valid contact information. This problem has attracted attention as users searching for customer support numbers have faced scam attempts, posing risks of financial loss and more. Reports indicate that Google is aware of the issue and is working to enhance its results, having already taken measures against some identified scam numbers.
A significant incident involved a user looking for a Swiggy customer care number, only to be directed to a scam where the alleged support agent requested screen sharing and a money transfer. It was later uncovered that Swiggy Instamart exclusively offers chat-based support, not phone numbers.
Another case included Alex Rivlin, who searched for a Royal Caribbean customer service number and was directed to a scammer impersonating legitimate services to acquire credit card information. Rivlin managed to detect the fraud in time and emphasized the risks of AI-generated results and spoofed numbers.
Google has recognized the issue and is reportedly taking measures to resolve it. Users are encouraged to be cautious and verify the information provided by AI Overviews, as the AI may not independently authenticate the data it presents. This situation highlights the necessity of double-checking AI-generated information, particularly when it concerns crucial contact details.
