In 2023, “Jury Duty” came onto our screens as an unexpectedly wholesome prank show, with Ronald Gladden as the hero of an unusual story, rather than a punchline. Thanks to its committed cast and Gladden’s perfect straight man delivery, the series felt like capturing lightning in a bottle.

Now, “Jury Duty” returns with its second season, titled “Jury Duty Presents: Company Retreat.” With a bigger scale and a charming new lead, it’s evident lightning can indeed strike twice.

What’s “Jury Duty Presents: Company Retreat” about?

“Company Retreat” reinvents “Jury Duty’s” premise, switching from a court trial to a company’s annual bonding trip. The company, Rockin’ Grandma’s Hot Sauce, employs actors except for Anthony Norman, a temp assistant for the retreat. This retreat marks a major change: CEO Jerry Hauck hands over control to his son, Dougie Jr. (Alex Bonifer), who returns from living in Jamaica with questionable business skills. Can Dougie make a good impression?

Standing out is the staff, with remote IT Claire (Rachel Kaly), receptionist PJ (Marc-Sully Saint-Fleur), and warehouse manager Jimmy (Jim Woods). The cast is reminiscent of “The Office’s” oddballs, providing comedic gold as they embody their roles throughout the retreat.

The season’s appeal also lies in its broader scale. Unlike the first season’s limited settings, “Company Retreat” utilizes a larger outdoor space, allowing more potential for discovery by Anthony. This approach not only presents a technical challenge but also shows the format’s potential as an anthology series.

“Jury Duty Presents: Company Retreat’s” star Anthony is a delight.

Thankfully, “Company Retreat” has found the right lead in Anthony. He befriends even the oddest characters he meets, notably Dougie. Despite Dougie’s extremes, Anthony’s hope for Dougie’s success creates a sweet bromance.

Anthony is dedicated to Rockin’ Grandma’s, ready to support his coworkers against a dubious venture capitalist firm. This commitment reflects his character and the season’s immersive design. Although it might seem manipulative, the final reveal remains heartwarming.

Anthony embraces spontaneity and embodies the perfect audience stand-in, laughing at the season’s wildest lines. His genuine reactions are a highlight.

“You couldn’t even make this up for a TV show,” Ronald states in a confessional. The script makes for great TV, elevated by Anthony’s role.

The first three episodes of “Jury Duty Presents: Company Retreat” premiere March 20 on Prime Video, with new episodes weekly.
