Rivian has introduced a new feature for its tech-savvy and adventurous customers: the ability to use an Apple Watch for vehicle controls, instead of relying on a phone.
The company announced that next week it will launch a companion app compatible with the Apple Watch as part of a broader update to the Rivian mobile app. With this app, Rivian owners can perform basic functions such as locking and unlocking doors, venting windows, and setting off the vehicle alarm via their Apple Watch.
Rivian is also incorporating more customizable features. For example, users can manipulate the digital crown on the watch to set a desired charge level or adjust the vehicle’s temperature. The app allows users to select four quick controls based on their most frequent needs.
However, there are certain restrictions for the first-generation R1T trucks and R1S SUVs. Owners will need to open the app and tap the lock icon on the Watch to lock or unlock their vehicle. On the other hand, second-generation R1 vehicles will unlock as the driver approaches, if a digital key is set up.
This Apple Watch integration accompanies a comprehensive update to the vehicle software system released on Thursday.
Most updates aim at improving performance and accessibility, including a “kneel mode” that lowers the vehicle another inch beyond its previous low setting. Drivers can also switch between different drive modes without disengaging the advanced driver assistance system.
Additionally, a new cold weather indicator will tint the battery graphic blue on the vehicle’s digital display, showing how much energy is used for warming.
Rivian specializes in EVs, but its software has emerged as a key product and selling point, attracting attention from companies like Volkswagen. In 2024, Rivian and VW established a $5.8 billion technology joint venture where Volkswagen will invest in Rivian upon achieving certain milestones, continuing through 2027. This partnership will develop software for future VW Group vehicles.
