Roblox Games are Back

Roblox is adjusting its terminology again, becoming more comfortable with using “games” instead of “experiences.” During the Epic v. Apple trial in 2021, Roblox had switched the term on its platforms. Roblox spokesperson Juliet Chaitin-Lefcourt explained to The Verge that “games” is a clearer term for users and reflects Roblox’s direction. Previously, defining “game” was a key point in the Epic v. Apple trial. If Roblox were classified as a game by Apple, its iOS app could face stricter rules. In response, Roblox adopted “experiences” to describe user-created gamelike interactions. Today, the term “experiences” is still used, especially in the App Store, but the homepage now features sections like “standout games.” This linguistic shift mirrors the broader industry’s decreased emphasis on the metaverse. Similarly, Roblox recently returned to the term “friends” after briefly using “connections.”
